What is a totalitarian state?
A government that takes total, centralized, state control over every aspect of public and private life(ex. Russia).
Who were the Bolsheviks?
The Bolsheviks were a radical political group that supported a small number of committed revolutionaries willing to sacrifice everything for change; they also had the values of communism.
What was the purpose of the Soviet Five-Year Plans?
The Five-Year Plan was made by Stalin and set impossibly high quotas, or numerical goals, to increase the output of steel, coal, oil, and electricity. The purpose of this plan was to make the economy better and more sufficient.
What was the Long March?
A 6,000 mile journey that was 34-36 months for Communists to retreat the Nationalists because of their very strong and unstoppable forces.
Who received the Chinese territory that was controlled by Germany after World War I?
Japan received Chinese territory in the Treaty of Versailles, instead of China.
Who was responsible for the Great Purge and who did it victimize?
Joseph Stalin was responsible for the Great Purge and it victimized anyone who seemed to be defying the government.
What did Freud believe (yeah I know, lots of stuff. But what from our book/notes?)
He believed that most human behavior was irrational and beyond reason.
What signaled what we consider to be the beginning of the Great Depression?
The stock market crash signaled the beginning of the Great Depression. This is because all of a sudden the market crashed and nothing was worth anything anymore.
What did Germany, Italy and Japan have in common during the early/mid 1930’s?
They were mad about the Treaty of Versailles, had growing nationalism, and all sought to grow an empire. Also they attacked and controlled another country during that time period.
What was the alliance between Germany, Italy and Japan called?
The alliance between Germany, Italy, and Japan was called the Axis Powers.
What effect did WWI have on literature of the 1920’s
Literature in the 1920s questioned the beliefs of society.
What was the Dawes Plan? Was it effective?
Giving loans to Germany from the United States so that they could build their economy. It was not effective because when the U.S economy fell, so did Germany’s.
What is the policy of appeasement?
To give people what they want, so that they do not hurt or harm you. This is exactly what Britain and France did with Germany before WW2.
What is a primary belief that guides fascism (hint, it was a long-term cause of World War I)?
Nations must struggle, authoritarianism, state more important than the individual, and action oriented.
What were some of the reasons that fascism appealed to the people of Italy and Germany?
Facism did not seem like the weak government that these countries were used to having, and the political leaders promised a better way of life and government. This was why facism appealed to the people of Italy and Germany.
