Module 2: Penile Masses/Injury in the Stallion Flashcards
Castrated male horses
Gelding
Intact male horses
Stallion
Intact stallion less than 5 years of age
Colt
is a prolonged erection of the penis
Priapism
the inability of the stallion or geld- ing to retract the penis into the prepuce
Paraphimosis
Causes of ____________:
- Trauma
- Tranquilizers (usually phenothiazines)
Priapism
- it is an EMERGENCY
- Venous stasis may lead to blood clots and necrosis
- Occurs mainly in stallions
- edema secondary to trauma or persistent, may lead to paraphismosis even after resolution
Priapism
Cause of _____________:
- Systemic disease (emaciation, trauma, purpura)
- Frostbite
- Trauma
-edema secondary to trauma or persistent, may lead to paraphismosis even after resolution of priapism
Paraphimosis
- May occur in stallions or geldings
- Defined by inability to retract penis into preputial cavity
- Emergency is reproductive ability to be retained
- Biggest hurdle to resolution: EDEMA
Paraphimosis
Treatment for ________________:
- Anticholinergics: Benztropine - need to treat quickly
- Lavage of corpus cavernosum and alpha1 agonist
- Creation of a shunt between CSP and CCp
- Phallectomy - lose reproductive capability
Priapism
Treatment for ____________________:
- Emergency if breeding animal
- Replace into prepuce if possible
- “Sling”
- Phallectomy
Paraphimosis
Genital Neoplasia:
Squamous cell carcinoma
