Module 2: Cryptorchidism, Testicular Hypoplasia and Testicular Degeneration Flashcards
incomplete development of the testicular parenchyma
Hypoplasia
- Cryptorchism
- Intersex conditions (Klinefelter’s syndrome, Polled goats)
- Hereditary condition
Hypoplasia
Very rare, consider unilateral castration first
Aplasia
What testicles are prone to torsion?
Intraabdominal testicles
What can be measured to detect the presence of cryptorchid testicle in a patient?
Anti- Mullerian Hormone (AMH)
Treatment:
Surgical removal
- don’t remove descended testicle until the cryptorchid testicle is removed
*Testicular descent usually happens by 3 months
*Cryptorchidism may be a autosomal recessive trait in a VERY small proportion of dogs
*Testicles are predisposed to neoplasia with Sertoli cell as the most common
Canines
*Equal frequencies to sides that are affected
*Neoplasia is reported but is LESS frequent than in canines
Equine
*Reported infrequently
*Neoplasia is reported infrequently as well
Bovine
*Common and hereditary in some breeds such as the Duroc
*Typically intraabdominal
Porcine
- Most common reproductive disease in male cats
Felines
