Module 2: Microscopy Flashcards
is an instrument that magnifies objects otherwise too small to be seen, producing an image in which the object appears larger.
microscope
The parts of the microscope can be classified as
Mechanical/supporting, magnifying, illuminating
parts of the microscope used to support and adjust the parts
Mechanical/supporting
parts of the microscope used to enlarge the specimen
magnifying
parts of the microscope used to provide light
illuminating
is the process of enlarging something only in appearance, not in physical size.
Magnification
Magnification is the function of a two-lens system
the ocular lens which is found in the eyepiece, and the objective lens which is situated in a revolving nosepiece.
Magnification is measured by multiples, such as
4x, 10x, 40x and 100x
total magnification
power of the objective (4X, 10X, 40x) and multiply by the power of the eyepiece, usually 10X.
This is the ability of a lens to show two adjacent objects as separate entities.
Resolving Power or Resolution
In a microscope, we ordinarily observe things within a circular space (or field) as defined by the lenses. We refer to this observable area as
field of view (FOV)
is required for efficient magnification and resolving power.
illumination
is greatest on the lowest power objective. Each time you switch to a higher power, it is reduced.
