What are the four stages of cognitive development?
- Sensorimotor
- Preoperational
- Concrete Operational
- Formal Operational
What is the sensorimotor age span, and what can a child do cognitively in this stage?
Birth to 2 years old. Object permanence.
What is the age span for preoperational, and what can a child do cognitively during this stage?
2 to 7 years old. Egocentrism, intelligence, pre-logical.
What is the age span for Concrete Operational, and what can a child do cognitively during this stage?
7 to 11 years old. Factual, about the world around them. Logical thinkers.
What is the age span for Formal Operational, and what can a child do cognitively during this stage?
12 and up. Think beyond facts. Hypotheses, metaphors, and abstract.
What is Zone of Proximal Development?
A child can learn cognitive skills within a certain range.
What are the 3 types of speech Vygotsky described?
- Private speech
- Silent inner speech
- Social speech
What is private speech?
Talk to myself-whisper or out loud.
What is silent inner speech?
Think it inside my head.
What is social speech?
Talk to others.
What did Vygotsky theory focus on?
Social and cultural interactions.
