Module 1.3 hardware Flashcards
The information processing cycle (input)
They use a gift the computer input using the mouse and keyboard
The information processing cycle (output)
The computer gives feedback on the results of its processing
computer output is usually pictures or text on the screen, sound or printing on a paper
The information processing cycle (processing)
The computer works on the data example calculating, sorting, searching ETC
the part of the computer that does all the processing is the CPU (central processing unit)
The information processing cycle (storage)
Storage let us keep a permanent record of our work. it receives output and can provide input for the computer. storage is internal (example hard disk) or portable (flash drive)
The information processing cycle (communication)
Computers linked to other computers can communicate. communication can provide input and output for the computer
Input
Is the data and instructions that are given to a computer
Why do computer need data
Because without data there is nothing to process
Special keys for keyboards
F1- usually opens the help screen for the program you’re working in
Esc - the escape key let you get out of the options or cancel choices
Print screen- enable your computer to take a photo of everything that is displayed on the screen at the moment
Advantages of wireless devices
There is less clutter as there are no cables
you have a wider range of movement
Disadvantages or limitations of wireless devices
-They require batteries
-they are slightly more expensive than wired devices
- they can easily be removed so they’re easily stolen
Size of a monitor
The size of a monitor is measured diagonally in inches from one corner to the other
Resolution
Resolution refers to the number of pixels used to form the screen imag
The resolution is measured horizontally and physically in pixels
1920 x 1080 means rows of 1920 across the screen and 1080 pixels vertically down the screen
Graphics card
The image has to be generated by specialised circuitry that we called the graphics card
Response time
The response time of a monitor is the time it takes to change a pixel from one colour to another and it’s measured in millisecond
Connecting monitors
Monitors used to connect only via the VGA port
HDMI
High definition multimedia interface
Two types of printers
Inkjet and laser printer
Inkjet printers
-Spray microscopic dots of ink onto the paper
- are relative cheap to buy
- use Ink cartridge that are generally individual cheaper than laser cartridge but they can be more expensive to use in the long run because they need to be replaced more frequently than the laser cartridge
-are capable of producing good quality colour printout such as photographs
-are generally still slightly slower than the laser printer
Laser printers
-Works like a photocopier machine (using toner instead of ink)
- generally more expensive to buy then the ink jet printers
- are generally cheaper to run then inkjet printers when printing large volumes
- generally prints faster than the inkjet printers

Printer queues
When you send a print task to the printer it is temporarily stored in the hard drive where it wait until the printer ready to print it
RAM
Random access memory
Storage medium
The actual physical material or objects on which we store the data and program
Drives
Computer hardware that read from and write to storage media are the storage devices
Storage capabilities
A kilobyte (KB) is 1024 bytes
A megabyte (MB) is 1024 KB
A gigabyte (GB) is 1024 MB
A terabyte (TB) is 1024 GB
Hard drives
The main and largest storage device of a computer located inside the computer case
Flash drive
Storage devices that uses electronic memory to store data
RSI
Repetitive strain injury
Repetitive strain injury
Injuries resulting from fast repetitive actions
Health tips for using computers
-Sit Correctly
-make sure the lighting is sufficient
-take regular breaks
- adjust the height of your seat
-Make sure the monitors not distance too close to your eyes
-occasionally turn your eyes away from the monitor
Green computing
Green computing is a term used to describe using computers in a way that is sensitive to the environment
Tips on how to practice green computing
Try save power
Try to upgrade automate old hardware
don’t waste paper
Recycled used ink and toner cartridges responsibly
Check if you can refill and reuse ink and toner cartridges
Ergonomics
Ergonomics is about designing things like chairs, desks, and tools to make them comfortable and safe for people to use. It’s about making sure things fit well with how our bodies move and work, so we can avoid injuries and be more productive. For example, an ergonomic chair supports your back and helps you sit in a way that’s good for your posture.
What is meant by the term default printer
The term “default printer” refers to the printer that your computer or device automatically uses whenever you print something
