Module 1 Sacro-Pelvic Canine Flashcards
PI Ilium how to tell
Fixed SI joint Short leg on affected side Rear leg lameness, puppy sitting SI pain Dog will not want to flex the hip and bring the leg forward
PI Ilium Patient standing 1
SCP: tuber sacrale (PSIS)
CP: thenar eminence or guarded thumb
ST: Adjuster is behind and to the side of the dog OPPOSITE then subluxation
STAB: Hand under the abdomen of the standing animal
LOC: PA IS ML, thrust toward the ipsilateral ASIS
PI Ilium patient standing 2
SCP - tuber sacrale
CP - thenar eminence
ST - Adjuster is behind dog
STB - cupped fingers of opposite hand grasping onto opposite tuber coxae
LOC - PA IS ML thrust toward the ipsilateral ASIS. Opposite hand stabilizes opposite tuber coxae - NOT a scissor move
PI Ilium patient in lateral recumbency
SCP - tuber sacrale
CP - thenar eminence or pisiform of the inferior hand
ST - dog is in lateral recumbency with PI ilium side up. Adjuster brings the SI joint to tension by extending the rear leg
STAB - inherent in the technique
LOC - PA IS ML thrust toward ipsilateral ASIS
AS Ilium how to tell
fixed SI joint
dog is hesitant to jump and resists rear leg extension or bringing the limb caudally
AS Ilium
SCP - tuber coxae - ASIS
CP - cupped fingers of adjusting hand
ST - adjuster is behind and to the side opposite of the subluxation
STAB - with the dog standing, support the contralateral tuber sacrale
LOC - AP SI LM pull thrust toward the ipsilateral PSIS
Sacral Base Posterior how to tell
Lack of normal depression between tuber sacrale and spinous process of last lumbar
Decreased motion in lumbosacral and SI joints
Sacral Base Posterior
SCP - midline of the sacrum at the first sacral tubercle
CP - guarded thumb or pisiform
ST - behind or beside the dog in a position that will allow the forearm to be in the proper LOC
STAB - hand under the abdomen as close to pelvis as possible
LOC - PA, perpendicular to the sacral base
Sacral Base Posterior technique 2
SCP - midline of the sacrum at the first sacral tubercle
CP - guarded thumb or pisiform
ST - behind or beside the dog in a position that will allow the forearm to be in proper LOC
STAB - handler’s leg under dog, table or drop table
LOC - PA perpendicular to the sacral base
Sacral Base Posterior Left or Right how to tell
will usually see decreased ROM in SI joints with rotation of sacrum being opposite the PI side (Right PI often has L sacral base)
Sacral Base Posterior Left or Right
SCP - lateral edge of the sacral tubercles on the side of the posterior rotation
CP - guarded thumb or pisiform
ST - adjuster is on the opposite side of the posterior rotation in the standing dog. Keep forearm perpendicular to angle of sacrum/croup
STAB - opposite hand under the abdomen as close to the pelvis as possible or handler’s leg under dog, or drop table
LOC - PA, perpendicular to the sacrum/croup
Sacral apex L or R, how to tell
sacral apex becomes fixed in lateral position
Dog will usually hold tail toward affected side
Dog will exhibit pain when sacral apex is pushed further into subluxation
Dog will exhibit pain when sacral apex is palpated
Dog show resistance to tail being lifted
Dog may have chronic anal gland issues
Sacral Apex
SCP - lateral portion of caudal sacrum. The adjuster’s thumb will drop into the notch present on the caudal sacrum
CP - guarded thumb or guarded thumb with open hand
ST - adjuster is behind the dog
STAB - support the contralateral tuber sacrale
LOC - LM, perpendicular to axis of the sacrum
