Module 1: Basic tissue types: Muscle Flashcards
skeletal muscle
voluntary
striated
Appearance: Elongated, unbranched, flattened nuclei, regular cross-striations, arranged in bundles
Location: All voluntary muscle
Function: Responsible for movement of skeletons and organs
visceral muscle
involuntary
smooth
Appearance: elongated, spindle-shape with pointed ends, centrally located nucleus, no striations,
Location: Gastrointestinal tract, uterus, urinary bladder, blood vessels
Function: continuous, rhythmic contractions, low force contractions, diffuse movement throughout muscle mass
cardiac muscle
heart muscle
myocardium
Appearance: one or two elongated and centrally located nuclei, longs fibers, branching cytoplasm, intercalated discs, cross striations
Location: Heart
Function: Contraction of the atria and ventricles of the heart
Contractile cells
myoepithelial: found in some secretory glands
pericytes: smooth muscle cells surrounding blood vessels
myofibroblasts: found during scar formation, also secrete collagen
