Module 1 Flashcards
What is Science
It is a body of knowledge or is a process of figuring out how things work
Seeing/noticing something strange that makes you want to find out, “what is happening?
Observation
Your hypothesis includes the question you are trying to answer AND the parameters of your experiment.
Question/Hypothesis
Simple or complicated, tests your question.
Experimenation
Human biases MUST be removed, typically this is done with statistics
Anaylysis
What is the answer to your question?, In science your conclusions should be reported to everyone.
Conclusion/Reporting
the test subjects do not know who is receiving the treatment
Blind Study
neither the subjects nor the investigator knows who is receiving the treatment and who is a control subject.
Double Blind Study
is the (potentially false) feeling in a study participant that he or she has benefited from the experimental treatment.
Placebo Effect
is any aspect of nature that is capable of changing
Variable
values are independent of the experiment * Time, temperature, are usually independent, but anything can be
Independent Variable
values are dependent to the independent variable. * This is what you are testing
* Test scores depend on study time
Dependent Variable
is a statistical measure that expresses the extent to which two variables are linearly related.
Correlation
third variable is the real cause of the observed correlation.
Spurious Correlation
a statement about how the world works that can be tested using the scientific method
Scientific Claim
