Cultural Relativism
a society’s customs and attitudes should be described objectively, and understood in the context of that society’s problems and opportunities.
Noble Savage
someone from a primitive culture who is supposedly uncorrupted by contact with society.
Ethnocentrism
when we use our cultural norms to make generalizations about other peoples’ cultures and customs.
Cultural change
forces within, contact between societies, and changes in natural environment.
Diffusion
movement of things and ideas from one culture to another.
Acculturation (Native Americans)
when alien traits diffuse in on a large scale and replace traditional cultural patterns.
Transculturation
when a person moves to another society and adopts its culture.
Stimulus diffusion
genuine invention that is sparked by an idea from another culture.
