Mod 8 Flashcards
Negative feedback loop steps
- STIMULUS
A change occurs in internal condition - RECEPTOR
Detects change - EFFECTORS
Muscles, organs and glands carry out the… - RESPONSE
Define homestasis
The process by which an organism maintains a stable internal environment, despite fluctuating external environment conditions. It involves enormous coordination of an organism.
Define stimulus
A change in the ambient or internal environment such as an increase or decrease in temperature.
Positive feedback
Maintains the negative feedback response: changing or amplifying its output.
Endocrine system role
Hormones interact with specific receptors on specific cells to initiate a desired response to achieve homeostasis.
Endorcrine stimiulus
Humoural: change in concentration of specific hormones
Neural: neurons stimulate the secretion
Hormonal: the pituitary gland secretes hormones to control the hormones secreted by other glands.
Role of the kidney
Osmoregulation: removing nitrogenous wastes from the bloodstream to maintain optimal levels of substances such as salts and water.
Filtration
Absorption
Secretion
Pros / cons of haemodialysis
PROS:
Allows removal of metabolic waste (urea).
Provides a long term solution for long implantation lists.
Accessible: offered by most hospitals.
CONS:
Limited to passive transport: not accommodating for all solutes. Timely: 3-5 hrs 3 x a week. Limits means of travel. Regulated diet and fluid consumption. Non Curative.
