phenomena relating to state formation
several phenomena relating to state formation: patriarchy and the subordination of women, the ideology associating purity and family honour, and the relationship of hypergamy and dowry to the status of women
what came with the rise of the state?
- With the rise of the state came patriarchy, a political system ruled by men and in which women have inferior social and political status.
Within this system, the patriarch, or the senior male, emerges and has absolute authority over everyone in the household.
related phenomena?
such as a concern for the purity (e.g., virginity) of females being linked to family honour, and the relationship of dowry (a marriage exchange in which the wife’s kin group provides gifts to the husband’s kin group) to hypergamous marriages based in hypergamy where low-status women marry, usually through arranged marriages, higher-status men, may also be evident.
