A
- overall state or feeling comfortable, healthy, happy
- made up of many components including mental health

A
- psychological, emotional, social aspects of thinking, feeling and behaving
- prerequisite to realizing potential, being able to cope w/ normal life stress, and being productive at work or school

Mental Health and Well-being exist along a continuum
A
- all ind. can be placed along continuum and place can change over time
E.x. mental illness but currently experiencing high well-being

Biopsychosocial Model
A
- determinants of mental health can be thought in 3 domains
- Biological (genetic determinants, brain dev.)
- Psychological (thoughts, behaviour, self-concept, self-awareness)
- Social (connectedness, context, maltreatment)
- determinants are not mutually exclusive and can interact w/ one another

Risk Factor
A
- biological, psychological or sociological characteristic or exposure which is associated w/ higher likelihood of negative outcome

Protective Factor
A
- a characteristic or exposure that lowers likelihood of negative outcomes or that reduces impact of risk factor

Risk factors can be distal or proximal
A
distal- an early exposure or factor
proximal- factor that represents a more immediate exposure or vulnerability

- trauma, abuse, neglect
- adversity from chaotic home
- poor early attachment relationships
- family history of mental disorders

- alcohol binging
- poor quality sleep

- healthy coping strategies
- no substance misuse
- healthy study-life balance
- social support
