Mod 3-4 Osteoarthritis Flashcards
According to the CDC, about what percentage of patients with osteoarthritis have a genetic basis?
- About 20-35% of knee OA
- About 50% of hip
Current cigarette smoking has shown to be protective for what?
Osteoarthritis
*Reason is unknown
What is the leading cause of disability among adults who are non-institutionalized?
Osteoarthritis of the knee
What type of osteoarthritis is shown to be significantly more severe in women than in men?
Knee OA
What is the most common type of arthritis?
Osteoarthritis
Who is affected by OA more?
OA affects males and females equally.
Patients with OA are asymptomatic until they are what age?
In their 50’s
What is the most common cause of osteoarthritis?
Aging process
When has osteoarthitis been knownt o affect younger persons?
Those with repeated stress to a given area
What is the definition of osteoarthritis?
Common arthritis characterized by loss of joint cartilage and reactive new bone formation.
What is the etiology of OA?
Associated with wear and tear of aging; can be caused by repeated trauma in the young.
What joints are predominantly affected by OA?
- Weight bearing joints such as the hip, knee, ankle, spine
- Interphalangeal articulations of the fingers
Symptoms vary from mild to severe depending on what?
The amount of damage that a joint receives.
When does osteoarthritis occur?
When the cartilage that covers the artiular ends of bones is worn away. Once the protective cartilage is destroyed, bone is free to rub against bone. Pain and stiffness is the result.
What is more crippling, osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis is worse than osteoarthritis.
What is the earliest radiographic finding in osteoarthritis and what causes it?
Narrowing of joint spaces caused by loss of the articular cartilage.
Outside of joint space narrowing, what are some other common radiographic manifestations of osteoarthritis?
- Development of small bony spurs known as osteophytes
- Periarticular sclerosis (later development)
What is periarticular sclerosis?
When bones rub against other bones for a long period of time, microfractures occur and new bone lays down wehre the periosteum has been damaged, and thus you see clearly a thin white line of bony sclerosis.
What is periosteum?
a dense layer of vascular connective tissue enveloping the bones except at the surfaces of the joints.
What is the effect of radiographic technique with osteoarthritis?
It is an additive because of the new bone formation. Increase technique.
