At risk of becoming unsteady and requiring physical assistance
Is cooperative and able to follow directions
Full weight bearing
Steps btw surface with minimal assist of one HCP
Display no more than a mild deficit in standing balance
Moves btw lying and sitting position with no more than one person minimal assistance
One-person assist
Patient is full weight bearing and needs assistance rising from a seated position
Is cooperative and able to follow directions
Bears substantial portion of weight consistently
Display no more than a mild deficit in standing balance
Transition from lying and sitting position with no more than one person minimal assistance
Two-person assist
Patient is full weight bearing but needs assistance rising from a seated position
Is cooperative
Bears the majority of weight consistently
Step btw surface with the assistance of two people
Display mild to moderate standing balance deficits
Transition from lying and sitting with no more than two person minimal assistance
If the patient weigh more than 250 ibs if you are unsure of their balance consider a sit to stand or mechanical lift
Sit-stand lift
Required for patient that weigh bear partially through at least one leg and both arms
Can hold on to the handle with at least one hand
Patient has unknown or unpredictable balance/ strength
Is cooperative
Follow simple directions consistently
Stand securely on the standing platform
Transition from lying and sitting position with no more than two persons minimal assist
Can tolerate the sling under his/her arms
Mechanical lift
Patient is non-weight bearing or otherwise unstable for the sit-stand lift
Is not able to cooperate consistently
Weight bear inconsistently or unable to do so
Display limited ability to participate in lift/transfer
Why is safe patient handling important
Healthcare work is among the most hazardous occupations
Back injury is the 2th leading occupational injury
Back injuries are expensive ( cost to pay over time coverage, cost to pay overtime coverage)
Significant time lost with injury ( mandated overtime, training new staff)
Stare body mechanics are not enough to prevent injury
