● OBJ 1.2: Compare and contrast the display components of mobile devices ● OBJ 1.3: Given a scenario, set up and configure accessories and ports of mobile device ● OBJ 1.4: Given a scenario, configure basic mobile-device network connectivity and application support
What is a mobile device?
Any device that makes it portable and easy to use
What is a capacitive touch screen?
Any touchscreen that works by seeing the distortion in an electrostatic field
What is the difference between a capacitive touch screen and a multi-touch screen?
A capacitive touch screen processes one touch at a time, while a multi-touch screen can process two or more contact points simultaneously
What does LCD stand for?
Liquid-Crystal Display
What is a pixel?
Individual point on a screen inside of a display
What does TFT refer to in the context of LCD panels?
Thin-Film Transistor
What is Twisted Nematic (TN) technology?
Contains crystals that twist or untwist in response to the voltage being applied or removed
How does In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology work?
Uses crystals that rotate to be able to deliver color
What is the contrast ratio advantage of a Vertical Alignment (VA) display?
A VA display has a contrast ratio of two to three times better than a standard IPS display
What is the function of a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL)?
Sits behind the display and lights up the liquid crystal display to show colors and images
What is the main advantage of using Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) in displays?
Uses less power, leading to longer battery life and better performance
What is unique about Organic LED (OLED) technology?
Each pixel has its own separate LED that provides the light
What is a digitizer in mobile devices?
Layer sandwiched between a layer of protective glass and the display panel inside of a touchscreen display
What does an accelerometer measure?
Velocity, rotation, and shaking of a mobile device
What additional functions does a gyroscope provide compared to an accelerometer?
Detects pitch (Y), roll (X), and yaw (Z); performs actions; stabilizes images
What is a track pad?
Device that can be used to manipulate the cursor on the screen
What does a drawing pad do?
Large format touch device attached as a peripheral to a laptop, smartphone, or tablet
What is the purpose of a microphone in mobile devices?
Used to record audio or capture voice when making a phone call
What does a speaker do in mobile devices?
Allows to hear things that are coming out from devices, such as music or videos
What is the combination of a microphone and speaker called?
Headset
What functionality does a digital camera provide?
Ability to capture a live image in a still format
What types of Wi-Fi standards exist?
Wireless a, b, g, n, ac, and ax
Which cellular technology converts voice into a digital format?
Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM)
What is Code-Division Multiple Access (CDMA)?
Cellular technology that uses code division to split up the channel
What does W-CDMA stand for?
Wideband CDMA
What does UMTS stand for?
Universal Mobile Telecommunications System
What is an electronic SIM used for?
A cheaper way of getting a data service when overseas
What is a Preferred Roaming List (PRL)?
Contains all the information about different cellular towers
What is Bluetooth used for?
Short-range point-to-point network connection between a mobile device and an accessory
What is the function of Near-Field Communication (NFC)?
Allows a device to receive and send information in the NFC format
What is a Lightning Cable?
Proprietary cable that is only used by Apple devices
What is USB-C?
Modern version of USB that operates at USB 3.0 speeds and can provide data
What is a DB9 Cable?
D-shaped connector with 9 pins that is used to connect external serial devices like modems
What does Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter (UART) do?
Allows to connect to a device and get information from it
What is a port replicator?
Uses the exact same features as a laptop and provides easier access to all the ports
What differentiates a docking station from a port replicator?
A docking station provides all the capabilities and features of a laptop
