MOA (neuro, msk, rsp) Flashcards
Temazepam (Restoril)
BENZODIAZEPINE
Enhances GABA
Zolpidem (Ambien)
NONBENZODIAZEPINE
Enhances GABA
Baclofen (Lioresal)
CENTRALLY ACTING MUSCLE RELAXANTS
Enhances GABA
Phenytoin (Dilantin)
HYDANTOIN
Inhibits sodium influx through sodium channels
Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
IMINOSTILBENES
Inhibit sodium influx through sodium channels
Decreases the discharge of neurons
Valproic acid (depakote) VALPROIC ACID
Inhibits sodium and calcium and plug through sodium and calcium channels
Decreases neuron discharge
Enhances GABA
Antiepileptic drugs
Slows the entrance of sodium and calcium back into the neuron
Suppresses neuronal firing
Enhances GABA
Levodopa (Dopar)
DOPAMINE REPLACEMENT DRUGS
Crosses the blood brain barrier taken up by dopaminergic nerves and converted into dopamine
Donepezil (Aricept)
CHOLINESTERASE INHIBITOR
Prevents enzyme acetylcholinesterase from inactivating acetylcholine
Memantine (Namenda)
NMDA RECEPTOR ANTAGONIST
Blocks excess glutamate from NMDA receptor’s which decreases the influx of calcium into neurons in brain
Fluoxetine (Prozac)
SELECTIVE SEROTONIN REUPTAKE INHIBITORS
Selectively block reuptake of serotonin which strengthens serotonin transmission over time
Venlafaxine (Effexor)
SEROTONIN NOREPINEPHRINE REUPTAKE INHIBITORS
Block neuronal reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine
Bupropion hydrochloride (Wellbutrin) ATYPICAL ANTIDEPRESSANTS
Blocks dopamine reuptake in CNS
MAOI
Block MAO-A (inactivates serotonin and norepinephrine) and MAO-B (inactivated dopamine)
Increases amount of those neurotransmitters in synapse
Amitriptyline (Evail)
TRICYCLICS ANTIDEPRESSANTS
Block the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin
Raloxifene (Evista)
SELECTIVE ESTROGEN RECEPTOR MODULATOR
Activates estrogen receptors in endometrial tissue, which increases the risk of getting endometrial cancer, and in bones which DECREASES BONE RESORPTION. This blocks access to estrogen receptors in breast tissue which decreases the risk of estrogen dependent or receptor positive breast cancer.
Alendronate (Fosamax)
Decreases bone resorption by decreasing the number and action of osteoclasts
Calcitonin-salmon (Miacalcin)
CALCITONIN
Decreases bone resorption by inhibiting action of osteoclasts and increasing the excretion of calcium and decreasing serum calcium patients with hypercalcemia
Calcium carbonate/citrate (Tums/Citracal)
CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS
Provides a non-dietary source of calcium and neutralizes stomach acid
Methotrexate and etanercept (Enbrel)
DMARDS
Immunosuppressive
Enbrel (DMARDS II) binds to tumor necrosis factor
Albuterol (Proventil/Ventolin)
BETA2 ADRENERGIC ANTAGONIST
Simulate sympathetic nervous system by promoting bronchodilation which relieves bronchospasms
Ipratropium (Atrovent)
INHALED ANTICHOLINERGIC
Blocks muscarinic receptors and bronchi which result in bronchodilation
Theophylline (Theolair)
METHYLXANTHINES
Relaxin smooth muscle and bronchi and pulmonary blood vessels
Beclomethosone/prednisone (QVAR)
GLUCOCORTICOID
Depresses information by preventing mediators like histamine from being released and preventing White blood cell action and this all decreases edema and airway
Montelukast (singular)
LEUKOTRIENE MODIFIER
Suppresses inflammation by inhibiting release of leukotriene
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
SEDATATIVE ANTIHISTAMINES
Binds to H1 receptors which blocks the release of histamine and is also a mild cholinergic blocker
Cetirizine (Zyrtec)
NONSEDATING ANTIHISTAMINES
Bind to H one receptors blocking the action of histamine
