Language disorder associated with acquired brain damage. Affects all aspects of language. NOT A SPEECH DISORDER
Aphasia
Complete loss of voice; speaks in whispers, vocal folds are abducted during speech
Aphonia
Difficulty in naming things, objects, and people
Anomia
Word substitution
Paraphasia
Writing disorder
Agraphia
Reading problems
Alexia
Sensory deficits
Agnosia
Disorder of sequenced movement of body parts in the absence of muscle weakness or paralysis
Apraxia
Patients cannot move the muscles of the throat, soft palate, tongue, and the cheek for non-speech purposes (can do it on their own though)
Oral apraxia
Patients cannot comply when requested to move their hand to wave goodbye or to show how a hammer is used (can do it on their own)
Limb apraxia
Group of motor speech disorders due to paralysis, weakness, or in coordination of the speech muscles (has no prob w/ language or reading)
Dysarthria
Neurological syndrome associated with persistent or progressive deterioration in intellectual functions. Loses ability to remember things, i.e. feed themselves, dress themselves
Dementia
(Swallowing disorder) A disorder of swallowing food and liquid
Dysphasia (not communicative disorder)
