Ch. 8 Vocab Flashcards
Frequency of vocal fold vibrations (measurable correlate is frequency)
Pitch
Contains vocal folds at the top of the trachea
Larynx
Average rate at which the folds vibrate (inappropriate pitch level. Ex: woman with deep voice)
Fundamental frequency
Intensity of the sound signal. More intense a sound signal, the greater it’s perceived loudness
Loudness
Extent to which the molecules of air or other mediums move. Greater the amp, the louder the sound
Amplitude
Strange production and harsh sound (voice)
Glottal fry
Modification of the laryngeal tone by the cavities throat, mouth, and nose
Resonance
Resonance due to structures of the oral cavity
Oral resonance
Resonance due to the nasal cavity
Nasal resonance
Excessive nasal resonance
Hypernasality
To little nasal resonance
Hyponasality
Define: etiology
Cause of
Voice disorder: shows no structural damage and usually exists in the speaker’s “mind”
Neurogenic, or psychogenic, disorder
Voice disorder: direct physical cause such as nodule, or contact ulcer, due to misuse or abuse of the voice
Functional disorder
Physical cause due to birth defect, disease or infection
Organic disorder
Complete loss of voice; speaks in whispers, vocal folds are abducted during speech
Aphonia
Lack of voice, disorders of loudness, pitch, vocal quality, and resonance. Difficulty phonating ( strangled, harsh voice)
Dysphonia
Surgical removal of the larynx
Laryngectomy
The patient who underwent laryngectomy
Laryngectomee
Motor speech disorder
Dysarthria
Handled electronic instrument that generates sound that the patient modifies into speech (Steven..?)
Electrolarynx (artificial larynx)
The belching sound is then articulated into speech sounds
Esophageal speech
Small nodes that develop on the anterior (frontal) and middle-third portion of the vocal folds
Vocal fold nodules
Masses that grow and bulge out from the surrounding tissue
Polyps
Growths on the laryngeal structures (is viral). Sounds breathy and hoarse
Papilloma
A thin membrane that grows across and closes some or most of the opening between the folds
Laryngeal web
laryngeal cancer
Carcinoma
