Ch. 4 Vocab Flashcards
Systems of speech:
Provides the “energy source” for speech (lungs)
Respiratory system
Five major systems of speech:
Respiratory, phonatory, articulatory, auditory, nervous system
Systems of speech:
Provides the voicing (larynx)
Phonatory system
Systems of speech:
Acoustic source provided by voicing are modified by oral motor structures (mobile and immobile articulators)
Articulatory system
Systems of speech:
Controls musculature, receives and makes sense of input information (CNS and PNS)
Nervous system
Systems of speech:
Processes speech and non speech acoustic signals received and perceived by listener.
Auditory system
Refers to sounds that can be produced at level of larynx
Phonation
Larynx
Valve that prevents substances from entering the trachea. Includes vocal folds, cartilage, bones
Vibrates and creates sound
Vocal folds
Glottis
Space between vocal folds
Quality of sound by influence of structure of pharynx
Resonance
Vocal tract structures in the cavities of the throat and mouth
Pharynx
Flexible structure at the back of the mouth
Velum or soft palate
Roof of the mouth and floor of the nose
Hard palate
Articulators (mobile, immobile)
Mobile: tongue, lips, mandible, velum
Immobile: teeth, hard palate, alveolar ridge (behind teeth)
