Mix and Flow of Matter Flashcards
What is a fluid?
Usually a liquid or a gas- anything that has no fixed shape, resists deformation and can flow.
What are slurries?
A slurry is a mixture of liquid
and a solid.
Define: Viscosity
A measure of a fluids resistance to flow
Define: Compressibility
A force acts on an object, against the force of gravity
Define: Buoyancy
The upward force the water puts on an object, against the force of gravity
Define: Density
The amount of matter in a given volume
What is matter?
Anything that takes up space and has weight
What is a pure substance?
Contains only one kind of particle
What is a mixture?
Contains two or more pure substances
What is a solute?
The substance being dissolved
What is a solvent?
The substance doing the dissolving.
What is concentration?
The amount of solute in a given amount of solvent
Define: Diluted
More solvent than solute
Define: Concentrated
More solute than solvent, or equal amounts of each
Define: Solubility
Max amount of solute that can be added to a given volume of solvent.
True/False: An unsaturated solution is one which more solute can be added and dissolved.
TRUE
What is the saturation point?
When no more solute can be dissolved
What 4 things affect solubility and rate of dissolving?
1) Type of solute and solvent
2) Temperature
3) Particle size
4) Agitation
What is the Particle Model of Matter?
1) All matter is made up if tiny particles. Solids have more than gasses and liquids
2) The particles are ALWAYS moving
3) Particles may be attracted to each other or bonded together
4) There are spaces between the particles
What is pascals law?
Pressure is exerted equally exerted in all directions
