Q

What is a glacier?

Q

What is a watershed?

A

An area of land that drains into one main lake or river. The “vertical edges” of a watershed are elevated areas

Q

What is the continenetal divide?

A

The highest point of land on a continent; rivers flow into different oceans depending on which side of the divide they begin.

Q

In the Depositional zone of a river, what is the speed of the water and what happens to the sediment?

Q

What is a river delta?

A

A landform created by deposition of sediment that is carried by a river as the flow leaves its mouth and enters slower-moving water (ex. lake, ocean)

Q

What are the characteristics of a stream? Name at least four

A
Speed of flow
Quantity of Water
Stream Shape
Stream slope
Riverbed shape
Stream width
stream bank
sediment size
amount of sediment/turbidity
17
Q

What is erosion?

A

The wearing away and transporting of rocks fragments and soil.

18
Q

What is Sediment?

A

Eroded rock fragments and soil carried by water and wind.

19
Q

What is sediment load?

A

The amount of water-borne materials (rock, soil, organic matter) a stream carries.

20
Q

What is deposition?

A

The laying down or depositing of sediments.

21
Q

What is chemical weathering?

A

Water reacts with chemicals to dissolve rock:

  • Water and carbon dioxide for carbonic acid
  • Hydrolysis - water reacts with minerals present in the rock (ex. Feldspar rock into clay minerals)
  • Oxidation - oxygen reacts with minerals present in the rock (ex. rust)
