mitosis and meiosis Flashcards
what are the phases in mitosis
- interphase 1
- interphase 2
- prophase
- metaphase
- anaphase
- telophase
- cytokinesis
describe phase 1 and 2 of mitosis
interphase one and two
cell simply grows
cell continues growing, starts duplicating DNA
growth continues while cell prepares for mitotic division
describe phase 3 of mitosis
prophase
mitotic spindle is created
describe phase 4 of mitosis
metaphase
the chromosomes have been lined up in the middle of the spindle fiber
describe phase 5 of mitosis
anaphase
the chromosomes are being pulled away from each other to the poles of the spindle fiber
describe phase 6 of mitosis
telophase
cleavage flow begins and chromosomes split into 2
describe phase 7 of mitosis
cytokinesis
chromosomes have been split one ends, the next repeats the cycle
what is mitosis?
creates two diploid somatic daughter cells that are clones of the parent cell.
A somatic cell spends most of its time in interphase, growing and replicating DNA in preparation for mitosis.
what is meiosis
basically it is mitosis but it goes through the stages twice
creates four haploid gamete daughter cells, each containing half of the original cell’s genetic material.
