Human Body System Flashcards
What are the eleven human body systems?
Reproductive Immune Cardiovascular Endocrine Skeletal Digestive Excretory Respiratory Nervous Muscular
What are the major organs in the reproductive system?
Man- •penis • testes •scrotum Female- •uterus •ovaries •Fallopian tube
What is the function of the reproductive system?
Male-produce sperm, hormones
Female-holds baby, produces egg cells and hormones
What are the diseases associated with the reproductive system?
Testosterone deficiency syndrome-
•makes it hard to think or make decisions
Gonorrhoea/ Chlamydia-
• sexually transmitted disease
What are the major organs in the immune system?
- tissues, cells, organs
- lymphatic vessels
- thymus
- bone marrow
- Tonsils
- lymph nodes
- appendix
- spleen
What is the function of the immune system?
- gets rid of anything unfamiliar
* protects body from diseases
What are the diseases associated with the immune system?
Auto immune disease-
• attacks the host
• attacks good cells
Appendicitis-
• becomes inflamed
• can burst
• releases bad toxins to body
What are the major organs the cardiovascular system?
- chambers
- pulmonary valve
- lungs
- tricuspid valve
- left atrium, left ventricle
- mitral valve
- right atrium, right ventricle
What is the function of the cardiovascular system?
- pumps blood around body
* keeps breathing consistent
What are the diseases associated with the cardiovascular system?
Coronary heart disease-
• develops when cholesterol builds up in artery walls
• creates plaque
Heart attack-
• artery is blocked (clot, plaque )
• can be deadly
What are the major organs are in the endocrine system?
Glands- • pancreas • pituitary gland • adrenal gland • pineal gland • thyroid • ovaries • testes
What is the function of the endocrine system?
Controls hormones
Pancreas helps digest food
What are the diseases associated with the endocrine system?
Pancreatic cancer-
• spreads to other organs quick
• it’s pain in abdomen
Pancreatitis-
• quick attack
• pain in side
• inflammation of pancreas
What are the major organs in the skeletal system?
Bones- • cranium • sternum • ribs • femur • vertebrae • clavicle
What is the function of the skeletal system?
It provides support/ structure for body
What are the diseases associated with the skeletal system?
Bone cancer-
• bones grow uncontrollably
• hurts
Osteoma-
• bone tumour
• bones grow on top of each other
• deforms
What are the major organs of the digestive system?
- mouth
- esophagus
- stomach
- small intestine
- large intestine
What is the function of the digestive system?
- Breaks down food
- Stores until you produce waste
- Repeats cycle
What are the diseases associated with the digestive system?
Chron disease-
• inflammation and scarring in the intestine
Celiac disease-
• immune reacting to eating gluten
• damages small intestine
What are the major organs in the excretory system?
- kidney
- lungs
- liver
- skin
- bladder
What is the function of the excretory system?
Elimination of waste products from body
What are the diseases associated with the excretory system?
Kidney stones-
• hard minerals and acids that stick together
• very painful
Gilbert’s syndrome-
• mild liver disorder
• harmless
What are the major organs in the respiratory system?
- lungs (left and right)
- Pharynx
- trachea
- alveolus
- bronchus ( left and right )
- oral cavity
- Nasal cavity
- diaphragm
What is the function of the respiratory system?
Taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide
What are the diseases associated with the respiratory system?
Lung cancer-
• have an 80% chance of dying in 5 years
• cells grow and see harmful chemicals
Emphysema disease-
• most common way is to get it by smoking
• shortness of breath
• lung tissue that helps breath in oxygen and breath out carbon dioxide is destroyed
What are the major organs in the nervous system?
- brain
- nerves
- spinal cord
- ganglion
- central nerve system
- peripheral nerve system
- neurons
What is the function of the nervous system?
- controls movement
- receives and sends messages to system
- Needs central and peripheral systems and well as 3 neurons to be able to function
What are the diseases associated with the nervous system?
Motor neuron disease-
• weakness in muscles
• slurred speech
• can barely move
Epilepsy- • brain disorder • seizures • sudden discharge of energy by nerve cells • 1-3 minutes
What are the major organs of the muscular system?
- triceps
- deltoid
- pectorals
- quadriceps
- rectus abdominus
- visceral muscle
- skeletal muscle
- cardiac muscle
What is the function of the muscular system?
- movement and stability
- Visceral muscle- moves stuff throughout organs
- cardiac muscle- keeps blood pumping
- skeletal muscle- moves body closer to bone
What are the diseases associated with the muscular system?
Fibromyalgia- • fatigue • sleep • mood issues • widespread pain through body • muscle pain and tenderness
Neuromuscular disorder-
• neurons becomes unhealthy and die
