Mitosis Flashcards
What is mitosis?
Mitosis is the division of the nucleus.
What happens in stage 1?
Each of the chromosomes in the parent cell make an exact copy of itself so the chromosomes are now pairs of chromatids.
What happens in stage 2?
The pairs of chromatids become shorter and thicker and begin to untangle.
What happens in stage 3?
The nucleus membrane disintegrates and the spindle fibres appear.
What happens in stage 4?
The spindle fibre attach to the chromatids at the equator of the cell.
What happens in stage 5?
The spindle fibre pull the chromatids apart to opposite sides of the cell.
What happens in stage 6?
A new nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromosomes.
What happens in stage 7?
The cytoplasm splits and two new cells have been made.
Why is mitosis required?
It is required for growth and repair.
