Cell structure Flashcards
What is the nucleus?
Contains the cells chromosomes which are made of DNA. These hold the genetic information which controls the cell.
What is the mitochondria?
This is the site of aerobic respiration. Found in cells with high energy demands, such as muscle cells.
What is the cell membrane?
This consists of phospholipid and protein molecules. It is selectively permeable and controls the entry and exit of materials in and out of the cell.
What is the ribosomes?
This is the site of protein synthesis. Ribosomes are found in the cytoplasm.
What is the chloroplast?
This is the site of photosynthesis. Contain the green pigment chlorophyll which absorbs light energy.
What is the cell wall?
Freely permeable layer around the cell membrane that supports and strengthens the cell.
What is the cytoplasm?
A jelly-like substance that fills the cell. Where chemical reactions take place.
What is the vacuole?
Contains cell sap, containing solution of salts and sugars.
What is a plasmid?
Small circular DNA molecule that contains genes which helps cells to function.
