Effect Of Osmosis On Plant And Animal Cells Flashcards
What does turgid mean?
The state of a plant cell which contains the maximum amount of water it can hold. The cell contents are swollen and push against the cell wall. A tissue in which the cells are turgid will be firm and so turgidity contributes to the support of the plant.
What does plasmolysed?
The condition of a plant cell which has lost water by osmosis to the extent that its vacuole and cytoplasm have shrunken away from the cell wall.
What happens to a plant cell when the water concentration is the same on the inside and outside of the cell?
The cell has no change when placed in a solution of equal concentrations.
What happens to a plant cell when the water concentration is higher outside the cell?
The water passes though the cell membrane by osmosis and the cell becomes turgid.
What happens to a plant cell when the water concentration is higher inside the cell?
The water passes out the cell membrane by osmosis and the cell becomes plasmolysed.
What happens to an animal cell when the water concentration is the same inside and outside of the cell?
There is no change when it is placed in solution if equal concentration.
What happens to an animal cell when the concentration is higher outside the cell?
The water passes in through the cell membrane by osmosis and the cell swells causing the cell to burst.
What happens to an animal cell when the water concentration is hight inside the cell?
The water passes through the cell membrane by osmosis causing the cell to shrink.
