Mitochondria Flashcards
What is the main function of mitochondria?
Cellular respiration and ATP production
In what way are mitochondria similar to bacteria?
They contain circular DNA and their own ribosomes.
What is the idea of endosymbiosis?
A eukaryotic cell engulfing an aerobic prokaryotic cell to form one cell with both features.
Fact
It is a significant part of the cell.
Which parent do you get your own mitochondria from?
Mother
What is the purpose of the folds found in mitochondria?
To increase surface area of the inner membrane.
What is the folding called in mitochondria?
Cristae
What is the main mechanical difference between the inner and outer membrane?
The outer membrane is much more permeable to substances than the inner membrane.
What is the intermembrane space similar to?
Cytosol
Do mitochondria have a dynamic between fusion and fission?
Yes
Why is there a dynamic for the mitochondria?
To determine the shape and number of mitochondria of each cell depending on the function of particular cells.
Do mitochondria have a high mobility?
Yes
Which cytoskeleton do they use in order to move?
Microtubules
What occurs within the matrix of mitochondria?
DNA transcription and replication, protein synthesis.
Why are mitochondria able to divide independently?
They have their own genetic system (genome)!
