Classification of organelles Flashcards
What is the function of a cell wall? (Plant cell)
Protect the plant cell, maintain its shape and prevents excessive uptake of water.
What is the cell wall made of?
Cellulose fibers with polysaccharides and protein.
How many layers of cell wall are there in a plant cell?
Primary, middle lamella and secondary cell wall
What does the nucleus contain?
The cell’s genes, enclosed by a nuclear envelope.
Function of RNA?
Protein synthesis
Where is the RNA found in a cell?
In the cytosol and the outside of the ER or Nuclear envelope.
What does the endomembrane system consist of?
Golgi apparatus, endosomes, lysosomes and exosomes.
The 3 types of vacuole are…
food, contractile and central vacuoles.
Function of contractile and central vacuoles?
Pump excess water out of cells.
Hold organic compounds and water to maintain structure in mature plant cells.
Function of mitochondria and chloroplasts?
Mitochondria facilitates cellular respiration to generate ATP.
Chloroplasts convert sun energy into sugars.
Similarities between mitochondria/chloroplast and bacteria?
- Double membrane
- Free ribosomes and DNA loops
- Reproduce independently in cells.
What two main structure control cell movement?
Cilia and flagella.
Which protein allows cilium to curve?
Dynein.
Which proteins allows muscle contraction to occur?
Actin and myosin.
What allows amoeboid movement?
Pseudopodia
