- Head part= Gnathosoma
- Body= Idiosoma

Mange

Otodectes cynotis (surface)
What are the indirect vs direct effects of mites?
Direct epidermal damage (skin erythema, pruritus, scale formation, lichenification)
-Loss of blood
Indirect effects= mechanical transmission or biological transmission of pathogens
What mite causes sheep scab?
- Psoroptes (P.ovis)
- Surface mite
What impact does chorioptes bovis have?
- Surface mite in cattle)
- Common cause of mange in cattle/ horses
- Causing irritation
What is ‘walking dandruff’?
Can be caused by Cheyletiella
-The mites walking amongst the debris looks like walking dandruff
What’s the name for chigger mites?
- Trombicula (surface)
- Only the larvae are parasitic
- Large and bright red to orange mites
What are Dermanyssus?
Chicken red mites
-Mites live off the bird and jump on to take blood meal at night.
What is the proper name for the Northern fowl mite?
- Onrithonyssus
- Surface mite
- Primarily stays on the host for entire life cyle
- Grey black appearance on feathers
Describe Sarcoptes scabei
- Zoonotic burrowing mite
- Highly contagious
- Cause very intense pruritus largely due to hypersensitivity to faecal material
- Diagnosed by DEEP skin scrapings
Name a burrowing mite that affects guinea pigs
-Trixacarus caviae
What is Notoedres cati?
A burrowing mite found mainly in cats
-Especially affects skin on head and around ears
