miscellaneous antibiotics Flashcards
nitrofurantoin drugs
nitrofurantoin monohydrate/macrocrystals (macrobid) and nitrofurantoin macrocrystals (macrodantin)
activity of nitrofurantoin drugs
only e.coli and no pseudomonas(for gram negative) and gram positives-all
nitrofurantoin indication
uncomplicated urinary tract infections
polymyxin drugs and route
polymixin B (IV) and Colistin (IV, inhaled)
polymyxin activity
gram negatives (pseudo, acinetobacter, some enterobactericiae) and no gram positive or anaerobes
polymixin indications
MDR pseudomonas and acinetobacter infections when no other alternatives are available(no empiric use) and restricted to ID consults
would you choose polymixin B or colistin?
polymixin B because easier dosing, no renal adjustment(can’t be used for UTI though), and less nephrotoxicity
fidaxomicin
PO, one of the first lines for C. diff colitis, not systemically absorbed
fosfomycin
for uncomplicated UTIs only and broad-spectrum activity
