Misc CNS + ADHD Flashcards
nonpharmacological tx for muscle spasms
heat, massage, TENS unit
3 types of pharmacological tx for muscle spasms
- acetaminophen
- NSAIDS
- muscle relaxants
muscle relaxants are part of which type of pain management
multimodal :)
what is the prototype for muscle relaxants?
cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril, Flexmid)
what is the most efficacious drug for muscle spasms?
cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril, Flexmid)
what are the SE for cyclobenzaprine?
CNS - drowsy, dizzy, fatigue
what substances should be avoided with cyclobenzaprine use?
ETOH, other CNS drugs
do CNS effects diminish with use with cyclobenzaprine or remain in tact?
diminish with continued use
what is the drug of choice for spasticity (MS, CP)?
baclofen (Lioresal)
what is the MOA for baclofen (Lioresal)?
decreases spasms with no muscle weakness
SE of baclofen
CNS effects
to avoid baclofen OD (respiratory death + coma), what do we need to do?
slowly titrate doses over time… start low and go slow
what substances should be avoided with baclofen (Lioresal) tx?
ETOH + other CNS drugs
what is the most efficacious drug (stimulant) for ADHD tx?
methylphenidate (Concerta)
how long does the efficacy of methylphenidate (Concerta) last? what would happen then?
2-3 years – you would expect to switch over to a non-stimulant ADHD drug (atomexetine - Straterra)
