Misc Flashcards
What hormone regulates iron absorption and release into the bloodstream? Where is it produced?
Hepcidin from hepatocytes.
What specific processes does hepcidin regulate?
Absorption of Fe in intestinal epithelial cells, how much absrbed iron goes into bloodstream an how much into ferritin, and release of Fe from macrophages of the reticuloendothelial system.
3 predisposing factors to sickling in sickle cell patients.
Low O2
acidity
low blood volume
What is the effect of nitrite poisoning?
Methemoglobinemia
Of which isotype are the anti-A or anti-B Abs in people w/ B or A blood types?
IgM
Of which isotype are the anti-A and anti-B Abs in people w/ AB blood type?
IgG
Isotype of anti-Rh Igs?
IgG
Hemolytic anemia w/ bite cells and Heinz bodies after dapsone or TMX-SMP.
G6PD deficiency anemia
What is Odansetron and what is its primary clinical use?
5-HT3 receptor antagonist. Tx of nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy.
What is the primary defect in hereditary spherocytosis?
Spectrin and/or ankyrin, cytoskeletal proteins are deficient and PM blebs off.
What kind of anemia does hereditary spherocytosis cause?
hemolytic anemia
Where are blood cells destroyed in hereditary spherocytosis?
in the spleen
Why is MCHC elevated in hereditary spherocytosis?
Red cell volume is depleted as PM and cytoplasm bleb off.
