minority influence Flashcards
what are the three beheavioural sttyles of minority infelunce
commitment
consistency
flexibility
study tip:leicester FCC
commitement
some minroities engage in very risky/extreme behaviours to draw attention to their lviews
important that these exteme beaviours present some risk to show greater commitment to their cause
gorup members pay even more attention
e.g being commited to being vergeratrian/people repect more/take it serriously
consistency
must be consistent in their views
two types
sychronic consistnecy-there all saying same thing
diachronic consistency-they have all been saying the same tthing for some time now
makes others rethink their views/maybe they have got a point if they all feel this way
flexibiility
offputting to majority if being extermenly consistnt and repeating same aguments again and again
members needd to be prepared to adapt their point of biew and accpet reasonable and valid counter arguments
snowball effect
one minority viewpoint got the attention of the majority group members, more and more peole begin paying attention and the minority viewpoint gathers momentum
moscovici procedure
lab experiment
partcipants were in a group where there were 2 confederates (the minority) and four partcipants (the majority)
everyone shown 36 blue slides, each different shade of blue
each asked to say whether slide was blue or green
confedereates delibertaly said they were green on 2/3 of teh trails, producing consistent minority view
control group was also used consisiting of particpnast sonly no confederates
findings of moscovici study
when confederest were cnistsnet, 8% of participants answers said the slides were green
however, when confederates ansewered inconsistenyla bout 1% of partcipanst said green
shows consistincy is crucial
strength-research support for ISI
research into minority infleunce support for informational social influence. In one of this variations, participants were asked to write down their answers rather then say the colour of the slide out loud
strength-research support for consistency
research support that demonstrates the importance of consistency. Moscovici st al study showed that a consistent minority opinion has a greater effect on other people than an inconsistent opinion
weakness-issues with the sample
reese h can be criticised for being gynocebtric. for example, the sample consisted of female participants which means that only the female response to minority infleunce was being assessed during the investigation
weakness-methodological issues
judging the colour of a slide is an artificial task and therefore lacks mudane realism since it is not something that occurs every day
