conformity Flashcards
conformity definition
type of social influence
when someone changes their beliefs or behaviours due to imagined or real life pressure from others
3 types of confomtiy
what are the names of the 3 types of confomrity
compliance
identification
internationalisation
compliance
shallowest level of conformity
here person changes their public behaviour, how they act but NOT their private beliefs
short trem change
oftne lasts as long as the group pressure is present
the result of NORMATIVE social infleunce (ASA)
identification
middle level of conformity
here person cahnges their public behaviour AND private beleives as memebers of group seen as desriable and role models
only short term, not maintained when members of group leave
result of normative social infleunce
internalisation
deepest level of confomity
here person changes their public and private beliefs to match the group
long tersm chnage
2 explanations of confomrity names
explains why people conform
NSI (normative social infleunce)
ISI (informational social infleunce)
NSI
where person confomrs to be accpeted and feel they belong in group
person conforms as socially rewarding, or to avoid social rejection
e.g avoid feeling that they dont fit in
usually associated wkith compliance and identification
ISI
when person confroms to gain knowledge, because they belive someone is right
usually associated with deepest level of conformity, internationsaltion
Strength of explanations of confomity
real world applications
real world applications that demonstrate NSI occur beyond the artificial lab setting
Schultz et al gathered data from many hotel rooms over a week where guests were allocated to rooms randomly as either control or experimental conditions
in control group, door hanger informing of environmental benefits of reusing towels
in experimental group, they were given additional info stating that 75% of guests chose to reuse their twoels each day
this group having been given normative info about other guests, reduced their need for fresh towles by 25 % showing they had conforemd to fit in with percieved group behaviour
weakness of explnations of confrmity
Individual differnces
research shows NSI does not affect evryone behaviour in same way
e.g those who have less crae to be liked are less effected by NSI
those who need care more about being liked, are affected by NSI
