minerals Flashcards
1
Q
what is the role of minerals
A
- assist in bodily functions
(e.g. - calcium is important for strong bones & teeth - iron is helps form Hb 9 improves transport of o2)
2
Q
how are electrolytes formed
A
- minerals are dissolved by the body as ions
- called electrolytes
3
Q
what are the functions of electrolytes
A
- facilitate the transmission of the nerve impulses
- enable effective muscle contraction
(both important during exercise)
4
Q
what are good sources of minerals
A
- meat, fish, eggs, dairy products
5
Q
what is the exercise related function of Calcium
A
- needed for strong bones & teeth
- efficient nerve & muscle function
6
Q
what is the exercise related function of Sodium
A
- regulate fluid levels in the body
- too much = increase b.p -> increase the risk of stroke or heart attack
7
Q
what is the exercise related function of Iron
A
- helps in forming Hb in RBC which helps transport o2
- lack of iron can cause anaemia
