Mineral nutrition Flashcards
1
Q
Mineral nutrition
A
Absorption and utilisation of mineral ions by plants for growth and development
2
Q
Hydroponics
A
- Growing plants without the use of soil
- Inert medium (gravel, peat, sand, sawdust) to which a nutrient solution is added containing essential elements needed by the plant for its normal growth and development
3
Q
Critical concentration
A
The concentration of the essential elements below which plant growth is retarded
4
Q
Macro elements
A
N, P, Mg (needed in large amounts)
5
Q
Micro elements
A
Mo, K, Fe (needed in lesser amounts)
6
Q
What does deficiency of macro and micro elements lead to?
A
- necrosis- death of tissue (particularly leaf tissue), deficiency of Mg and K
- chlorosis- loss of chlorophyll leading to yellowing of leaves, deficienct of Mg K
- wilting
- inhibition of cell division
