Mineral dissolution Flashcards
What are the 3 main categories of weathering mechanisms?
Physical
Chemical
Biological (combination of both)
What are some examples of physical weathering?
Freeze-thaw (expand and fracture)
Hydraulic action
What are some examples of chemical weathering processes?
Dissolution (dissolving)
Oxidation (redox)
What are some examples of biological weathering processes?
Liches (organic acid break rock down)
Roots (grow into fractures)]
Burrows
What does it mean when saying bicarbonate is ubiquitous?
Readily available all places on earth
What is the equation for bicarbonate?
HCO3-
What will Fe^2+ and ^3+ be like?
2+= from mantle
3+= rusty orange (oxidised)
What are some examples of carbonates?
Limestone
Chalk
Calcite
How is bicarbonate formed from calcium carbonate?
Ca cation is forced and and replaced by H+ cation
What type of dissolution is carbonate mineral dissolution?
congruent
What does congruent dissolution mean?
complete with all going into solution
How does dissolution of silicate occur?
SiO4 + balancing cation
Acidity H+ knock and stick to oxygen anions
What type of dissolution will take place with alumino silicates?
Incongruent
What does incongruent dissolution mean?
incomplete- secondary solid formed (alumino silicate clay mineral)
What is an example of incongruent dissolution?
feldspar dissolution
