Army Leadership and the Profession
What is the Army profession
The vocation of Soldiers and Army civilians who have been entrusted to defend the constitution and the rights and interests of the American people
Five characteristics of the Army profession
Trust, Honorable Service, Military expertise, stewardship of the Profession, Espirit de Corp
Describe the Army values
A Soldiers compass for how to conduct themselves in every aspect of life. The principals and beliefs that guide the Army profession
Describe leadership
Influencing people by providing purpose direction and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organization.
What is a Army Leader
Anyone who by virtue of assumed role or assigned responsibility inspires and influences people by providing purpose direction and motivation.
Difference between competencies and attributes
Competencies are skills that can be trained while attributes encompass personal characteristics, which are molded over time with experience.
How does a good leader adapt their approach
The mission, organization, and situation
Formal leadership vs Informal Leadership
One is assigned by rank the other is personal initiative
What should all leaders strive to do
Improve their attributes and competencies, adapt their leadership to the situation, become lifelong learners.
Three Levels of leadership
Direct (Face to Face / First line leader), Organizational (Typically commanders responsible for leading various organizations), Strategic (Leadership spans multiple organizations and performs a wide range of function)

Understand the reason for opposition or non-compliance

A mark for performance to assess the execution of a task
Basis for successful leadership development
Commitment by the army, superiors and the individuals to leader development. Clear purpose for what how and when. Culture of learning.

Through counseling, coaching, and mentoring
What are the development stages of a team
Formation, Enrichment, Sustainment
How do leaders demonstrate stewardship
When they act to improve the organization beyond their own tenure
