A
- to see if having the experimenter in the room affected level of obedience, so this was carried out with exp in touch by phone

A
- there was physical distance between exp and teacher
- initial instructions were given face to face, and then experimenter would leave the room and would continue to give the instructions via telephone

A
- number of ppts willing to administer 450v sharply fell from 65% to 22.5%
- ppts continued to give lower shocks, rather than increasing voltage
- when experimenter asked about this they would lie, saying they increased the shocks

what was concluded from the exp?
A
- when the experimenter is not face to face with ppt, it is easier not to obey
- physical presence was importantly force
- if experimenter returned to lab, then obedience was obtained again
