Why did Milgram conduct an obedience experiment?
Interested on why German soldiers were being blindly obedient to the commands of superiors whom ordered them to kill innocents in WW2
What was Milgram’s aim?
Asses to what extent someone would blindly obey an authority figure’s command to harm an innocent person
Who were Milgram’s participants?
40 males
Aged 20-50
Describe the procedure of Milgram’s experiment?
-Upon arrival, participants would be introduced to other participant (confederate)
- drew lots to who was teacher and learner
Participant was always teacher - teacher administered electric shock everyone answer was incorrect
What happened if the participant asked to stop?
Experimenter gave prods
After 4 prods, participant allowed to leave
What was Milgram’s findings?
65% have shocks up to the maximum of 450V
