Action
Blocks stimulate ion of beta1 (myocardial) and beta2 (pulmonary, vascular, uterine) adrenergic receptor sites
Reduced the effects of epinephrine and NE
Therapeutic effects
Decreased HR and BP
Prevention of MI
Decreased migraines
Contra indications
Cardiogenic shock
Bradycardia
Pulmonary edema
Uncompensated HF
Use cautiously in:
- renal/hepatic impairment
- pulmonary disease
- diabetes mellitus
- Px with allergic reactions
- GERI (may have sensitivity to beta blockers, lower dose)
Adverse effects
Frequent:
- erectile dysfunction
- fatigue
- weakness
Heart failure
Arrhythmias
Bradycardia
Pulmonary edema
Anaphylaxis
Safe dose

Be aware of cognitive changes
Apply nasolacrimal pressure for 1-2 mins after administration to minimize systemic absorption
