Drug classes
Therapeutic: bone resorption inhibitor
Pharmacological: bisphosphonates
Indications
Treatment and prevention of osteoporosis
Treatment of Paget’s disease
Paget’s disease
Disease of the bone
Joint pain, warm skin around joint, shooting pain, numbness
Action
Inhibits bone absorption by inhibiting osteoclasts activity
Therapeutic effects: reversal of osteoporosis progression / Paget’s disease
Contra indications
Abnormalities of esophageal emptying (delay)
Inability to sit up for 30 mins after
Renal impairment
Use caustiously in:
- history of upper GI disorders
- hypocalcemia
- vit D deficiency
- hypertension
- invasive dental procedures
Adverse affects
Frequent: musculoskeletal pain

Miki takes calcium carbonate
- may decrease absorption of this
Miki takes ASA
- increase risk of GI damage with NSAIDS
Also takes ramipril, Timoptic, omeprazol
DO NOT CRUSH
Nursing actions
No food with drug
Assess miki for ability to sit up for 30 mins
Assess serum calcium before
Give in morning with thickened water
