Action
Binds to enzyme on parietal cells in the presence of gastric pH
Prevents final transport of hydrogen into gastric lumen
Therapeutic affects
Dismissed accumulation of acids in gastric lumen
Lessened GERD
Healing of duodenal ulcers
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity
Use of rilpivirine
Use cautiously in:
- hepatic impairment
- patients with high doses for >1 year
- hypocalcemia
- beers list (Geri)
Adverse affects
Frequent:
- abdominal pain
Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis
Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms
Steven’s Johnson syndrome
Toxic epidermal necrolysis
Clostridioides difficile associated diarrhea
Hypersensitivity reactions
Safe dose

Nursing actions
Doses to be taken at least 1h before meals
Assess client for abdominal pain
Monitor bowel function for diarrhea and occult blood
