Midterm: Lecture 5 Flashcards
Biofeedback
operates on notion that we can influence the automatic functions through our minds
How can one stop a migraine
Cause hands to become warmer than normal, and can short circuit a migraine
Can train a person to:
block pain, neuritis and other conditions
EMG
measures muscle activity. two electrodes over skin
Up train
increase muscle activity
Down train
decrease muscle activity
Common muscles for up training
Frontalis, masseter trap
EMG used for which patients
Stroke, paralyzed limb as nervous system may stimulate more muscle activity
Common example of up training
Vastus medialis obliqus (VMO)
common case of patellofemoral pain syndrome
More commonly up trained muscles
VMO IS, SS, T minor Erector spinae Trans abs Pelvic floor
Narrow vs Wide
if you only want it to pick up one muscle put on narrow.
If you want any possibility of a muscle contraction put in wide
Temp biofeedback
device that monitors skin temperature using a sensor atach to foot or middle finger
GSR or EDR
galvanic skin response or electrodermal response
Electrical conductance in skin and is associated with sweat glands. Detects if anxious or not
EEG
another method. Measures brain waves
Polygraph
chest and abdominal area sensors. Records sweat gland activity
