Final: Lecture 8 Flashcards
Electrodes
different in shape and size
Most are carbon
ifc
has 4 electrodes
NMES:
neuromuscular electrical stim. must have intact peripheral nerve
Precautions:
- CV reasons
- Pregnancy
- Superficial metal
- Decreased skin sensation
With raise BP
Wave form
Wave forms - asymmetrical biphasic
used for
Used for pain management, pain gaiting. produces Endogenous opiates - lasts 30-45 mins
high rate
acute- superficial
multiple electrode placements, high rate, low width, gating, more comfortable for long applications, best for acute pain
low rate
deep penetration- chronic
used over motor pts, low rate, high width, endogenous opiates, good for chronic pain, tx time – 30-45 min
Ramp modulation:
Rise time or time to reach peak amplitude
Used with exercise to:
strengthen muscle. Timing in critical
Can also be used for :
spasticity, edema, as well as pain management
Which fiber receives pain
A delta
contraindications
pacemaker, carotid sinus, over eye, epilepsy, malignancy, loss of sensation
Electrode placement
Motor point – anatomical location where peripheral nerves enter the mm
