Different tests to determine if there is a medical problem
What kinds of sampling do we do?
urine samples
blood samples
Fecal samples
What kind of equipment do we need to do blood sampling?
needle (fit to patient size), syringe or vacutaner,
vacutainer: Double-pointed and collection tubes with and without anticoagulants
What size needle do we use for dogs and cats?
22 gauge
Large dogs 20 gauge, 19 gauge
What does a red top tube have in it?
nothing added
What does a green top have in it?
heparin
What does a purple top have in it?
EDTA
What does a blue top have in it?
Sodium Citrate
What do we use to take a urine sample
voided sample - a clean, dry container with a handle
midstream collection
Where is an alternative, less painful area to collect a blood sample?
marginal ear vein
Urine is most often collected for?
gross and microscopic analysis and for culture if indicated
How much urine is needed for a quantitative urinalysis?
7 - 10 mL
How long can you let a urine sample sit before it needs to be refrigerated?
within 30 min. of sampling
What ways can we collect a sample of urine?
voiding, manual bladder expression, cytocentesis, catheterization
What ways can we collect a fecal sample?
client brings in sample, we use a fecal loop
