It responds to three key crises of globalization:
- Crisis of identity
- Crisis of authority/accountability
- How to be safe?
Why political?
There was frustration with secular modernity because it failed to provide a moral framework for the community
Explain the crisis of identity
-Questions about who are we
-In a world of increasing globalization, identity becomes more diluted
-Do we pretend the community does not have a history or identity
-Religiously inspired terrorism wants to embrace a religious identity
Explain the crisis of accountability
-Who is in charge? Who is responsible?
-There is no clear hierarchy
-Religiously inspired terrorism answers this because god is the ultimate authority
Explain how the politicization of religion is universal
The secular state is always cast as an evil entity, image of a cosmic battle between good and evil, religion is good
