How was France’s involvement in Algeria a contradiction?
France, which claimed to value equality, was not practicing this in Algeria - Algerians were treated as second-class citizens

- During the Algerian War, they used torture to extract information in an attempt to dismantle the FLN
- When it became clear the France may give Algeria independence, French officers on Algeria organized their own terrorist group (the OAS) to attemp to prevent this
Is nationalist terrorism usually successful?
Nationalist terrorism is generally successful because of broad support (the international community saw nationalist violence as a legitimate means to self-determination) base and easy recruitment
What happened once the FLN was in power?
They established a one-party socialist system but failed to provide good governance and suppressed political opposition
