Microscopes Flashcards
What does the word ‘sectioned’ mean in terms of microscopes?
When a specimen is cut into very thin slices with a sharp blade to be looked at under a microscope.
What is a ‘wet mount’?
When specimens are suspended in a liquid such as water or an oil. A cover slip is placed on from an angle and aquatic samples and other living organisms can be viewed this way.
What is a ‘squash slide’?
A wet mount is first prepared then a wet lens tissue is used to gently press down the cover slip.
What is a good technique to use to observe ‘soft samples’ under a microscope?
Squash Slides.
What is a ‘Dry Mount’?
When a solid specimen is placed on the centre of a slide and a cover slip is placed over this sample.
Eg: hair, pollen, dust, insect parts
Muscle tissue or plants can be SECTIONED and viewed this way too.
What is a ‘smear slide’?
When the edge of a slide is used to smear a sample creating a thin coating to be observed under the microscope.
